Klein McCarthy Architects was commissioned by Cass County to study options for adding housing to their existing jail. Various types of cells, type of construction and staffing projections were considered during the study. A unique aspect of this project is the request for all cells and dayrooms to be directly visible from a single elevated control station to reduce staffing. The study resulted in a multi-phase expansion project with phase one adding 192 bed housing unit with supporting functions.
Klein McCarthy Architects was awarded the project to design and construct the housing addition. The addition will provide the facility with 16 new classifications each with ADA capabilities. This is due to having a jail elevator for laundry and food carts to the second level which can also serve inmates with disabilities. Each cell and dayroom will have access to direct daylight. The facility plans to have most cells as single bunked initially and add upper bunks in the cells as needed which have been sized for double occupancy. Along with housing, this project includes a jail medical suite, programs, maintenance garage, property storage, and facility storage. The program spaces include multi-purpose rooms, counseling rooms, and recreation rooms. Phased construction will start in April 2023 and go until April 2025.
