Sustainable Building Initiatives

Klein McCarthy Architects believes in integrating sustainable design initiatives into every project. Our design philosophy is to first explore every energy saving and sustainable option that has no cost impact as part of our typical design process. LEED certification and the incorporation of critical building elements are sensitive issues that need to be established early in the design criteria. Our firm has experience with projects involving LEED certification as well as many that did not pursue this certification but incorporated various sustainable features. We explore the following sustainable design initiatives on every project as part of our 'best practices'.

Klein McCarthy Green Building Initiatives:

On Site Storm Water Management

Low Maintenance & Indigenous Landscaping

Low Maintenance & Indigenous Landscaping

Manage storm water impact of site and structures in a manner that lessens the impact on the existing storm water system.

Low Maintenance & Indigenous Landscaping

Low Maintenance & Indigenous Landscaping

Low Maintenance & Indigenous Landscaping

Select and encourage use of plant materials and landscape elements that require less maintenance and limited irrigation. Where possible use local plant species.

Water Use Reduction

Low Maintenance & Indigenous Landscaping

Controllability & Monitoring of Systems

Select fixtures and promote operational procedures that reduce the overall water use load of the facility.

Controllability & Monitoring of Systems

Controllability & Monitoring of Systems

Controllability & Monitoring of Systems

Ensure systems are specified for maximum control by facility management.

Existing Building Structure Reuse

Controllability & Monitoring of Systems

Existing Building Structure Reuse

Where possible reuse elements of existing structure to minimize labor and materials needed to produce new facility.

Regional Materials Utilization

Controllability & Monitoring of Systems

Existing Building Structure Reuse

Where possible specify materials locally produced to promote the local economy and reduce shipping cost and environmental impact.

Daylight Capture & Maximization

Innovative Wastewater Technologies

Daylight Capture & Maximization

Where possible capture and use daylight to reduce reliance on artificially produced heat and light to increase energy efficiency.

Light Pollution Management

Innovative Wastewater Technologies

Daylight Capture & Maximization

Select exterior light fixtures that produce appropriate light levels without contributing to light pollution. Where possible meet LEED and 'Green Globes' criteria for light pollution reduction.

Energy & Systems Performance Benchmarks

Handle wastewater in a manner that lessens the impact of the facility on the municipal sanitary sewer system.

Energy & Systems Performance Benchmarks

Energy & Systems Performance Benchmarks

Energy & Systems Performance Benchmarks

Set and ensure the facility Mechanical and Electrical systems ultimately meet benchmarks for efficient performance.

Storage & Collection of Recyclables

Energy & Systems Performance Benchmarks

Storage & Collection of Recyclables

Provide a location and work with facility to develop a procedure for the collection and storage of recyclables where possible.

Construction Waste Management

Energy & Systems Performance Benchmarks

Storage & Collection of Recyclables

Produce a plan for recycle and /or reuse of construction waste.

Low Emitting Materials Selection

Where possible specify materials with Low or

No VOC emissions to promote a healthy air

quality environment.
