Klein McCarthy Architects was tasked with renovating courtroom 4 in the Rice County courthouse which consisted of a large assortment of mismatched and dated furniture items. The County wished to reuse an existing courtroom bench from their GSB which was recently made to help during covid in 2020. 6 of the existing pews were also brought back from their various places they were placed around the public corridors and courtroom.
From portions of the bench, gallery rail, and witness bench, a new bench was created and rearranged to bring the witness stand next to the recorder. The clerk and recorders benches are now raised 6” and every part of the bench is now ADA accessible. There were minimal new pieces needing to be fabricated despite significant changes to the layout outside of the clerk, recorder, and judge’s bench. This was aided by how the bench was designed to be relocated and the original millworker who built the bench in the first place won the bid to do the work.
The former courtroom space in the GSB would be remodeled into office spaces for the Guardian Ad Litem and Parks and Facilities departments as part of other re-model work in the GSB that was included in this project.
